What a driving licence costs depends mostly on how many driving lessons you need — and that varies more than most people think. Here is every part of the total cost of a B licence in 2026, so you can estimate your own route to the licence.
Trafikverket's fixed fees in 2026
- Theory test (kunskapsprov): SEK 420
- Driving test (körprov): SEK 1,000
- Licence photo: SEK 120
- The exam fees are the same for automatic as for manual.
These fees are paid to Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Administration) and are identical whichever driving school you choose.
The driving school part — lessons, courses and theory
The biggest share of the cost is driving lessons. How many you need depends on prior experience and how often you drive. Choosing automatic often means fewer lessons, since you skip clutch and gear work entirely. On top of lessons you need Risk 1 and Risk 2 (both mandatory) and theory material. 2026 changes that affect the cost
- The introduction course (handledarkurs) for private practice driving is abolished on 1 August 2026.
- From August 2026 a passed theory test stays valid for 1 year instead of 4 months — less risk of paying for a retake because time ran out.
How to keep the total down
- Drive regularly — one lesson a week beats occasional lessons.
- Pick a package instead of single lessons if you know you need several.
- Study theory in parallel with driving, not afterwards.
- Consider automatic: fewer skills to learn often means fewer lessons.
